An In-Line Transmission Fluid Filter Kit from Ford now accompanies all re-manufactured E4OD and 4R100 transmissions. The purpose of the kit is to prevent repeated planetary failures due to poor or clogged cooling systems.
The kit is designed to be used on transmissions having 3/8 or 5/16 inch cooling lines. As seen in Figure, the kit contains the following items:
1. One In-Line Filter made for 3/8” cooling lines.
2. Two tubing connector adapters for 5/16” lines to a 3/8” hose.
3. Two tubing connector adapters for 3/8” lines to a 3/8” hose.
4. Four hose clamps.
5. One 3/8 inch hose 12” inches long.
6. One Measuring Container.
7. One Transmission Pan Sticker
8. Instruction Sheet.
The cooling system should be thoroughly cleansed by flushing and back flushing the system. A cooler flow test should then be performed when fluid temperature has reached 70 to 120ยบ F using the measuring container supplied in the kit. Hot Car Scanner? E4OD transmissions using 1989 to 1994 pumps should produce 24 ounces in 15 seconds while 1995 to 1998 style pumps and 4R100 transmissions should produce 32 ounces in 15 seconds.
ATSG highly recommends using Sonnax’s Sonaflow Meter when checking cooler flow as the flow can be observed during driving conditions. For example, due to the internal design of an oil to air (OTA) cooler used in some Ford trucks, contaminates may still hold even after a thorough flush. During driving conditions these contaminates restricts cooler flow which can not be observed during a static flow test. .
Once a good cooler flow has been established, locate a section of the RETURN cooling line that has at least 12 inches of straight tubing or hose. Cut out a 9 inch section of steel tubing or 3 ¾ inches of the cooler rubber hose.
Using the appropriate ferrule nut, install the In-Line Filter with the arrow pointing towards the transmission.
This In-Line Filter should be changed after every overhaul, transmission exchange, fluid change or every 30,000 miles. Should this filter become restricted with an excessive amount of contaminates, there is built into the filter a spring loaded bypass valve protected by a metal re-enforced core as seen in Figure . This filter can be purchased separately for servicing.
