FORD AXOD-E - converter clutch shudder and new 25 spline turbine shaft

COMPLAINT:
After rebuild, some vehicles equipped with the AXOD-E transaxle may display a torque converter clutch apply shudder, and/or a shudder as the accelerator is pressed without allowing a downshift (Crowd Shudder).
Beginning December 20, 1993, the AXOD-E (AX4S) transaxle was built with a 25 tooth turbine shaft instead of a 23 tooth turbine shaft. The 25 tooth turbine shaft requires a larger diameter “0” ring seal that does not come in all gasket and seal packages.

CAUSE:
The cause may be, the wrong size “0” ring seal (23 Spline) installed onto a 25 spline turbine shaft (See Figure 1).

CORRECTION:
If service is required on a transaxle containing the 25 tooth turbine shaft, install the turbine shaft “0” ring with the larger diameter, available under OEM part number FOTZ-6749-B. The turbine shafts can be easily identified by measuring the shaft diameter directly behind the “0” ring location (See Figure 1). The 23 spline turbine shaft diameter is 1 .O lo”, as shown in Figure 1. The 25 spline turbine shaft diameter is 1.065”, as shown in Figure 1. The drive sprocket support bushing inside diameter did not change, and both turbine shafts will work in the sprocket support. Just make certain that you have the turbine shaft and torque converter matched, and the proper “0” ring installed.

SERVICE INFORMATION:
If replacement of either the torque converter and/or turbine shaft is required, ensure that equal number of splines exist on the mating part.
CAUTION:
IT IS POSSIBLE TO INSTALL A 25 TOOTH CONVERTER ONTO A 23 TOOTH TURBINE SHAFT, IF THIS OCCURS, THE VEHICLE WILL HAVE NO FORWARD OR REVERSE MOVEMENT.
